Activities to Help Preschoolers Love Reading

  • August 12, 2016

As a preschool teacher, you are a cheerleader for your student’s learning efforts. While teaching your students how to read, let them know it’s okay if they don’t get every word right. Promoting their reading skills while having fun is more important than getting through a book without any mistakes. To help instill a love for reading in your preschoolers, here are three reading activities you can do as a class:

  1. Pause and Talk About The Story
During story time, stop and pause throughout the book and talk about what’s happening with your students. This will not only help children develop important language skills; it can also help them link stories to everyday life. Try saying: “What do you think will happen next?”

  2. Ask Your Students to Be An Illustrator
After reading a book together, ask your students to illustrate their favorite part. This activity allows preschoolers to use their creativity while making their own interpretations of the story. After they’ve finished, have them share what they drew or write a few sentences about their picture.

  3. Act it Out
As you’re reading together, do more than just read the words on the page. Bring your enthusiasm and dramatic talents to each sentence and encourage your students to do the same. Once they become familiar with a story, suggest they act out their favorite scenes. They’ll love the idea of pretending to be their favorite characters.
