World Smile Day! Promoting Kindness in the Classroom

  • October 7, 2016

A happy child makes a motivated learner! Early childhood experts say children who are happy and enjoy school have a greater chance of increasing the amount of learning they do during the school year. Kindness plays a big role in young children’s happiness. In honor of World Smile Day on October 7, here are three ways you can promote kindness in your preschool classroom.

  1. Give your students chances to help each other
Small groups are a great way for students to practice prosocial behavior because they have to learn how to work together. The next time you have your students break out into a small cooperative group, try telling them that part of their responsibility as a group is to help each other. Studies show that students who engage in cooperative learning are more likely to treat each other with kindness.

  2. Greet your students every day as they come into the classroom
When students feel like they belong and are a part of something bigger than themselves, they are more likely to treat others kindly. A simple, “how are you today” can make a big difference in a child’s day.
  3. Use a positive tone of voice
Modeling a kind attitude and kind words is contagious and can instantly put a smile on a child’s face. As children are developing, it’s important to remember that they are greatly influenced by others and their behaviors. Using positive tones often will encourage children to do the same.
