There’s always time for a good book!

  • July 17, 2024

No matter what your summer plans are, one thing is for sure- There’s always time for a good book! Summer is a perfect time to incorporate reading activities into your classroom. No matter the age you work with, reading aloud to children helps them increase their vocabulary and will improve their reading ability later in life, and begin to understand that written words have meaning. These acronyms from Save the Children are great reminders of how to make the most of storytime:

S.H.A.R.E & R.E.A.D.

S – Snuggle with the child

H – Help the child turn pages and point to pictures

A – Ask the child questions about the story

R – Respond to the child’s comments

E – Enjoy this special bonding, brain-building time together!

&

R – Remember to mention the title, author and illustrator

E – Explain confusing words and concepts

A – Ask the child questions about the story

D – Discuss the story during and after reading

Check out this video for some simple best practices for reading with young children.

To signal it is time to read, you might want to start with a song that helps children prepare to listen, like this simple Storytime Hello Song.

Don’t forget that reading for fun is good for adults, too! Reading helps you learn more about our world. Finding books on topics you want to explore can support your self-improvement goals and spark creativity. Sometimes, a good book is just a way to relax or decompress. So whether it’s by yourself or with your class, opening a book is always a great idea.
