What is one of the most important routines? (Hint: It’s not work-related)
It’s your sleep routine!
Sleep might be something you don’t think much about–until you’re not getting enough. Lack of sleep can affect your mental health, behavior and memory. No matter your age, a healthy sleep routine helps you to feel and function better. Newborns need 12 to 16 hours of sleep per day, including naps, while adults need at least 8 hours. A good sleep routine can help everyone get the rest they need!
During the day, you should:
- Stay active: Moving your body helps release tension, reduce stress, and tire you out, making it easier to sleep.
- Avoid Over-scheduling: While staying active is good, too many activities, especially close to bedtime, can overstimulate you and make it harder to wind down.
- Eat Well: Maintain a balanced diet and eat at the right times. Going to bed hungry or too full can disrupt your sleep.
At bedtime, remember to:
- Keep It Simple: A bedtime routine doesn’t have to be complicated. For kids, it might be “Brush, Book, Bed.” For adults, it can be just as simple.
- Wind Down: At least an hour before bed, start winding down. Avoid blue light and do something relaxing, like reading. Using a fan or white noise can also help you relax faster.
- Be Consistent: Staying on a consistent sleep schedule helps your body know when it’s time to wind down.
