Your guide to an early childhood education career in Arizona

  • July 28, 2025

Thinking about an early childhood career but not sure where to start?

You’re not alone, and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. Whether you’re just starting or returning to school, the Arizona Early Childhood Workforce Registry is your go-to hub for scholarships and credentials, with the Arizona Early Childhood Professional Development Network being your guide to accomplish your early childhood career goals!

Even better? First Things First (FTF) and the Professional Career Pathway Project (PCPP) offer early childhood education scholarships that support you step-by-step — from CDA to certificate to a bachelor’s degree — without overwhelming debt.

Where to begin:

Ask yourself: What is my current education or career goal?

You don’t have to jump straight into a four-year degree. Many early childhood professionals start with smaller milestones and build from there.

Your pathway options:

1. Child Development Associate (CDA) credential

  • For educators working with children birth-5
  • Earned through coursework, job experience, portfolio and observation
  • Available through credit or non-credit training
  • Some colleges offer credit for a valid CDA

2. Certificate of completion in early childhood education

  • Covers early learning fundamentals like child development, curriculum and safety
  • Fewer general ed courses than a degree
  • Typically 12–30 credits

3. Associate’s degree in early childhood education

  • Combines ECE coursework with general education
  • Can build on certificate credits
  • Typically about 60 credits

4. Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education

  • Expands your knowledge of child development and teaching strategies
  • Includes advanced general education coursework
  • Usually 60+ credits beyond an associate’s degree

Tip: Make sure your credits transfer if changing colleges.

A scholarship journey: Step by step

1. Starting out

You’re working as an infant room assistant teacher. You enroll in a local CDA program, supported by FTF and PCPP scholarships, that cover tuition, books, and assessment fees.

➡️ Bonus: CDA coursework counts toward a certificate of completion, giving you a head start.

2. Moving forward

Your CDA boosted your confidence and skills. You decide to pursue your associate’s degree, again with help from FTF College Scholarships.

3. Reaching higher

Now a lead teacher, you qualify for a bachelor’s degree scholarship based on your region’s funding plan. A few semesters later, you graduate — proud and prepared for what’s next.
