Every April, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) plans the Week of the Young Child (WOYC). This week is used to celebrate young children, their families and the educators who support them. It’s also a time to highlight advocacy opportunities that support the early childhood field. People around the country show their support by following NAEYC’s WOYC daily themes, planning events and finding local ways to advocate.
Stepping into the advocacy space can be scary. You might wonder if your voice matters or if you know enough to help. The truth is all you need to advocate is a passion for early childhood and the desire to create change.
Where do I start?
Advocacy isn’t one-size-fits-all. There are many ways to turn your passion into action:
- Read the First Things First Early Childhood Advocacy Guide: Learn more about ways to advocate and helpful resources to get you started.
- Register for the Request to Speak Platform: Share your opinion of current bills in the Arizona legislature that affect early childhood.
- Connect with organizations and resources that support early childhood: AzAEYC, Children’s Action Alliance, and the First Things First Government Affairs update are great places to start.
Your voice matters
Your passion for early childhood education is your greatest tool. No matter how you choose to start, your advocacy brings attention to the importance of early childhood. So this year, share the Week of the Young Child message proudly.
