84 Health, Safety, & Nutrition 3. Nutrition & Dietary Practices (continued) 3. Mealtime Behaviors Level 1 Recognize that mealtime should be a pleasant social and learning experience for each child. Follow direction for promoting positive eating behaviors by: o Creating a setting that is safe, relaxed, and conducive to conversation o Gradually introducing new foods in ways that enable children to enjoy a variety of nutritious foods o Encouraging children to serve themselves, to the extent possible, and assist with set-up and clean-up of meals HSN 3.3.1 Level 2 Implement the following practices: o Provide eating utensils, serving equipment, tables and chairs that are the appropriate size for each child o If food is served, incorporate family style meals to help children be comfortable during mealtimes and to assist children in learning self-help skills o Divide responsibility at mealtime between the adult and the child HSN 3.3.2 Level 3 Develop and model ways to create a mealtime atmosphere and routines that facilitate the development of healthy eating practices. HSN 3.3.3 Level 4 Develop and evaluate mealtime policies and procedures, including nutrition and mealtime as an integrated part of the program. Evaluate curricula and practices to integrate food and meals with opportunities to learn about food’s role in culture and social customs, food production and preparation, and health and nutrition. HSN 3.3.4 Level 5 Analyze, evaluate, articulate, and apply current knowledge, theories, research, and best practices regarding mealtime practices that effect children and families in early education settings and in the community. HSN 3.3.5 4. Response to Food Preferences Level 1 Recognize and allow for food preferences while encouraging each child to eat foods being served. HSN 3.4.1 Level 2 Observe each child during mealtimes to identify individual eating behaviors, patterns, and skills. HSN 3.4.2 Level 3 Develop food-related activities that respect cultural and family beliefs and practices.
